Case Study: Mississippi
Surplus Lines Association
In the summer of 2007, the Mississippi legislature passed a law requiring the Mississippi Windstorm Underwriting Association (MWUA) to impose a new assessment on certain kinds of surplus lines insurance policies. MWUA contracted with the Mississippi Surplus Lines Association (MSLA) to process the assessment. The systems and processes MSLA had in place at the time could not accommodate the new legislation, yet the law required the new assessment to be in place in January 2008. Based upon the success of the Surplus Lines Automation Suite in Florida, MSLA teamed with Infinity to meet this challenge.
In August 2007, MSLA partnered with Infinity to implement the Surplus Lines Automation Suite—SLIP and RAPID—to streamline its current practices and to improve its technological infrastructure.
The objectives of MSLA’s adoption of SLIP and RAPID were to:
- Implement the SLIP software for surplus lines agents and insurers to submit their policy information.
- Implement the RAPID software for MSLA to review, audit, and reconcile the policy information provided by both agents and insurers.
- Document, analyze, and streamline MSLA’s current business processes.
- Allow MSLA to collect revenue for taxes, stamping fees, and other possible future assessments.
- Assist MSLA in becoming a paperless organization.
- Analyze, design, and implement a new internal network solution.
- Train the MSLA staff on the systems and new auditing and review procedures.
- Redesign the MSLA website and logo to create a stronger brand.
